Apple granted new patent for under-display Touch ID

When it comes to biometric authentication, it's hard to say whether face or fingerprint recognition is more secure. But Apple seems to think the latter would definitely be needed, with a rumour of Touch ID coming back to the flagship iPhone models appearing before. Now, we also know Apple is working on a new Touch ID.

The company has successfully patented a new Touch ID system that may be included with this year's iPhone 12s series. Specifically, it's going to be an enhanced under-display Touch ID system. The sensor underneath is supposed to detect light through the screen, which indicates that it's an optical sensor instead of an ultrasonic one.

Previously, Touch ID required the home button

So, how is this different from existing under-display sensors? The patent describes the use of a light-emitting layer covered by a transparent one, which presumably helps detect fingerprints via reflected light. Allegedly, this would create a better contrast for the fingerprint image.

Whether this new Touch ID would make it into this year's iPhone models is unknown. Plus, it's unknown if this would have any significant benefits to authentication speed and accuracy. Let us know what you think in the comments below, and stay tuned to TechNave for future updates.
