Switching phones, especially from iPhone to Android, can be a hassle because eSIMs usually can't be transferred directly. You often have to contact their telco to get a new QR code to activate the service on their new phone. But, that could change soon. So, what should you know about it?
Even though in Malaysia, iPhones still support physical SIMs, many users also use eSIMs as their primary or secondary numbers. However, iOS 19 may make this process easier. In the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 update, several clues were found in the Google SIM Manager app that indicate iOS 19 will support wireless eSIM transfer from an iPhone to an Android phone.
For your information, this feature is expected to appear on the new “Transfer to Android” page in iPhone settings, under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. You might be able to initiate a transfer by scanning a QR code on an Android phone, similar to the current method of transferring between Android devices.
Additionally, this process may require a session ID and passcode generated by the iPhone. If the connection fails, it may be because the iPhone is still using an iOS version older than iOS 19. While it may sound strange that iOS functionality is found in a Google app, this suggests that Google may have worked with or been informed in advance to provide this transfer support in its apps. With WWDC 2025 approaching, this feature is likely to be announced soon.
Interestingly, eSIM transfer between devices in the same ecosystem already exists, so extending it across platforms is a logical step, likely a result of telcos' demand to reduce user reliance on manual support.
