If you recall, Indonesia announced a ban on sales of the iPhone 16 series last week. The Indonesian government cited the failure to meet the investment requirement as the reason for the ban. After a week, Apple finally has a response to that.
According to Bloomberg , Apple has pledged to invest USD10 million (~RM44 million) in a factory in Indonesia. This Bandung factory would make accessories and components for Apple products. Moreover, an Apple supplier in Indonesia, Yageo Corporation, will help supply the factory.
The Ministry of Industry in Indonesia has yet to respond to the offer, so whether the ban would be reversed remains to be seen. On the one hand, the approximately RM44 million investment is peanuts compared to the estimated IDR200 billion (~RM5.5 billion) investment requirement remaining. However, a factory could provide more long-term returns.
