Apple is preparing a significant push into artificial intelligence with two new smart-home products. A tabletop “virtual companion” robot is planned for 2027, while a more compact smart-home display is expected by mid-2026.

These devices are designed to showcase an upgraded Siri and strengthen Apple’s presence in both local and global markets, including Malaysia.

What happened

Apple’s upcoming AI companion robot, code-named J595, is designed as a tabletop device with a seven-inch iPad-style display mounted on a robotic arm.

The arm can swivel to face and follow users, creating a more personal and interactive experience. The device will feature a new operating system called Charismatic, offering multi-user support, clock faces, widgets, and the ability to recognise individual users to deliver tailored responses.

Ahead of the robot’s release, Apple plans to introduce a smart-home speaker with a built-in display, code-named J490, by mid-2026.

This model will not have the robotic arm or fully conversational Siri but will offer smart-home controls, music playback, web browsing, note-taking, and video calling. It may also debut an updated Siri interface.

Apple is also expanding its smart-home lineup with new security cameras and other connected devices, aiming to create a more integrated home ecosystem.

What's next?

These additions will work closely with the Charismatic operating system and the enhanced Siri, reinforcing Apple’s strategy to build a seamless AI-driven home environment.

The company’s renewed focus on AI follows slowing iPhone sales growth. CEO Tim Cook has reportedly highlighted winning in AI as a key priority for the company’s future.

However, some industry observers have noted that Apple has made similar promises in the past, making execution a crucial factor in the success of these upcoming products.
