Apple has released an iOS update specifically for older devices in order to fix a major vulnerability that was actively being exploited. Called iOS 12.5.6, the update is now available for iPhones, iPod touch and iPads that can’t run on the latest software by Apple.
According to the Apple Support page, the WebKit vulnerability was fixed in iOS 15.6.1, iPadOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1. However, since there are many older devices that people are still using, Apple has incorporated the fix in iOS 12 via the aforementioned update for older devices as well to shield their devices from active vulnerabilities.
Devices that can’t install an update past iOS 12 include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPod touch 6, original iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3. The update can be downloaded over the air (OTA) by opening up the Settings app, tapping on "General," and selecting the "Software Update" option.
It’s really commendable for Apple to still release a software update to these devices despite they’re already being flagged as Legacy Devices and have already enjoyed more than four years of software support. Let’s hope that other manufacturers follow suit!
