Apple is reportedly developing a foldable iPhone that may launch in 2026, featuring a crease-free display and an estimated starting price of around RM8200 (USD1800).
Samsung is also expected to implement similar display improvements in its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8, indicating a major shift in the design of foldable smartphones.
Apple’s foldable iPhone: Crease-free design incoming
Apple is said to be working with Samsung Display to produce a foldable OLED screen that uses laser-drilled metal support plates to eliminate screen creases.
These plates, manufactured by Fine M Tec, are designed to better disperse mechanical stress along the fold, improving durability and visual quality.
The foldable iPhone is expected to include a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It may feature a titanium body with a liquid metal hinge, dual rear cameras, a single front-facing camera, and Touch ID integrated into the power button.
The device could be approximately 4.5mm thick when unfolded and around 9mm when folded. Mass production is reportedly planned for the second half of 2026.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 to follow suit
Samsung is expected to adopt the same metal plate technology from Fine M Tec for its Galaxy Z Fold8. The move suggests both companies are focused on solving one of the most common complaints about foldable devices — the visible crease in the middle of the display.
This marks a significant improvement in foldable display technology and could help push foldables into the mainstream.
Pricing and production insights
Analysts estimate that Apple’s foldable iPhone will be priced between USD1800 and USD2000, or approximately RM8200 to RM9100. This places it in the same premium range as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7, which launched at USD1999.
The cost of the crease-reducing metal plates is estimated to be around USD30 to USD35 per unit, equivalent to about RM140 to RM160. This added component cost could influence final retail pricing, particularly for Apple, which tends to use premium materials and finishes.
Would you consider switching to a foldable iPhone, or are you more interested in what Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has to offer? With both brands aiming to remove the crease from foldable screens, the next wave of foldables could look and feel much more refined.
