A recent leak from Apple’s internal code suggests that the upcoming M5-powered MacBook Pro may break its Wi-Fi dependency and include a built-in 5G modem. The code reveals it's powered not only by the next-generation M5 Pro chip, but also by a custom in-house 5G modem codenamed “Centauri", which first appeared in the iPhone 16e.
Does It Matter?
For years, MacBooks have lacked an option for seamless cellular access, unlike iPads and many Windows laptops. Now, a 5G-enabled Mac means users could access the internet without relying on Wi-Fi or phone tethering, which could be a game-changer for mobility and flexibility.
On top of that, having a vertically integrated modem—paired with Apple’s silicon—lets the company optimise energy efficiency, hardware–software harmony, and ultimately tune the experience in ways third-party components cannot match.
Timing and Availability
Although this discovery isn’t a guarantee of a shipping product, it's the strongest hint yet that Apple is on track for a truly untethered MacBook. The M5 MacBook Pro, possibly equipped with this built-in 5G modem, is believed to be lined up for release in early 2026.
The cellular feature might remain exclusive to the Pro lineup at first, though there's potential for it to trickle down to the MacBook Air in future iterations. We will have to wait and see if this feature comes to fruition. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
