Apple's patent application shows that its future AirPods may utilise ultrasonic touch sensors

Future iterations of Apple's AirPods Pro and AirPods Max may feature an advanced ultrasonic touch sensor to make the wearable audio devices more usable in wet conditions. This is according to a patent application by Apple which was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office yesterday.

Shared by Patently Apple, the patent details how the ultrasonic technology allow users to use touch controls even when wet or while wearing gloves. If it can be successfully implemented, this would be a neat quality of life update for the devices which currently struggles to get touch control right when in wet conditions.

The patent application further asserted that the devices would have 'ultrasonic touch sensing capability'. It then elaborated the technology as something that is less affected when conductive, electrically-floating liquids (e.g., water droplets) or insulated objects (e.g., gloved fingers) come into contact with its touch-sensitive surface.

However, like many patents, we may not be seeing the technology in action for quite some time. Hence, we highly doubt that the upcoming AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Max 2 will have the feature.
