"Hey, Siri" is a phrase you may have said often, without realising that your Apple device was secretly recording everything you say. Probably. Or at least that's what the California federal court has determined.

According to Reuters, Apple has to pay USD95 million (~RM428 million) to settle a class action lawsuit against Siri. The lawsuit claimed that Siri was violating user privacy by recording conversations when it was activated and then sharing the recordings with third parties. This case was filed on 17 September 2024 and concluded on 31 December 2024.

So, how were users' privacy violated? Well, one plaintiff claimed to have started getting ads for Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants. Another said he received ads for surgical treatment after a private conversation with his doctor. It's estimated that this lawsuit has tens of millions of class members. Each member is expected to receive up to USD20 (~RM90) per Siri-enabled device, which means members may receive more depending on how many Siri devices they have.

While the preliminary settlement has been filed and Apple has agreed to pay, the company insists it has done nothing wrong. What do you think?
