Apple will be making the activation keyword for Siri simpler. According to the latest report, the tech giant is removing the "Hey" from the "Hey Siri" voice command. If nothing went wrong, the switch would arrive in next year's major OS update.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter that the company has been working on the change for several months. Although it sounds like something easy to implement, it actually requires more effort than we thought. Unlike "Hey Siri", the problem with using only "Siri" is that the iPhone has to understand it in multiple accents and dialects. It makes it more difficult than having two words in the trigger for the voice assistant to recognise. Gurman claims it "requires a significant amount of AI training and underlying engineering work."
Of course, Apple is not the first one that tries to shorten the trigger phrase for its voice assistant. Amazon already has "Alexa" replacing "Hey Alexa." Meanwhile, Google uses "OK Google" and "Hey Google" but allows users to make follow-up requests without repeating the wake word. The reporter added that Apple would also improve Siri's ability to understand users and take the correct course of actions, but no details are here yet.
