Apple wants Siri to adjust speech volume based on ambient conditions

Voice assistants have been around for years, but most people don't really use them that often. Of course, that hasn't stopped Apple from wanting to improve Siri. In fact, the company has filed a new patent for environmentally aware voice assistants.

According to AppleInsider, Apple is working on an upgraded Apple Siri that can detect the ambient noise level and adjust its speech volume based on that. The patent describes how devices can determine 'conditions of an environment of the appliance', which would then adjust playback volume or speech output mode.

The voice assistant seems to be designed for smart speakers

What's interesting is that the voice assistant can whisper in quiet environments, or shout in noisy ones. Since appliances were mentioned in the patent, it can be assumed that this feature is mainly intended for Apple's HomePod speakers. Of course, we can also expect the Apple Siri on iPhones to get the upgrade if and when it's ready.

Personally, this seems like an upgrade with very niche uses. It could be useful if you use smart speakers a lot, as you can shout across a room and get the speaker to pick up your voice.
