The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the jurisdiction of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) continuously implements restrictive measures on social media platforms and websites with content that promotes gambling. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, the relevant Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, said MCMC blocked 5,026 gambling websites on social media platforms from 2022 to February 1, 2025, and removed 224,403 gambling content during the same period. Based on public complaints and monitoring carried out in collaboration with internet service providers and digital platforms, MCMC will continue to take such actions from time to time.

At the same time, since January 1, every social media and internet messaging service with at least eight million registered users must apply for an Application Service Provision License. Commenting further, Fahmi said that the licensing process received various reactions from the parties involved, with some of them cooperating, but no less than those who gave reasons to delay the process.

As far as we know, WeChat, TikTok, and Telegram are the three providers that have received licenses to operate in the country. Meanwhile, Meta still has no new developments and LinkedIn is in discussions with MCMC for this licensing purpose.
