Astro Malaysia Holding Bhd today announced that it will further invest in global streaming services on its platform as well as provide more local content via Astro Originals. Moreover, the company is building its growing online presence and continuing to look for opportunities to strengthen its digital, broadband and commerce businesses.
According to Bernama, Astro is aiming to become an “incredibly effective machine” that offers the best content via the right products and platforms that resonate with customers. Its chief operating officer (COO) and chief executive officer (CEO) for TV, Eun Smith said that the company will leverage digital, data and technology to reimagine its business models. Furthermore, Astro will continue to invest in transformation plans, particularly in content, broadband, streaming, customer experience, data, addressable advertising and technology infrastructure to simplify the processes.

Smith further elaborated that Malaysia is transitioning to over-the-top (OTT) services in a streaming world with consumers looking for convenient ways to fulfil their entertainment needs, hence the popularity of streaming platforms. However, the Astro COO said that the saturation of OTT services meant that the space is getting more fragmented and expensive.
Therefore, Astro welcomes the partnership with global OTT players such as Netflix, Disney+ Hoststar, iQIYI, TVBAnywhere+ and HBO GO as customers are now not willing to pay for multiple streaming services individually. Accordingly, Astro aims to aggregate more global streaming services to its platform, with the addition of BeIN Sports Content, BBC iPlayer and Zee 5 coming soon.
Besides that, Smith also announced that Astro is continuously innovating and launching new products and services that are exciting for customers and relevant to today’s needs. These include the connected Ultra and Ulti Boxes so that customers enjoy a seamless and uninterrupted viewing experience no matter rain or shine. At present, the company has over 600,000 installations of the connected Ultra and Ulti boxes, with access to over 90,000 titles on demand.
