BYD has officially beaten Tesla in the global electric vehicle sales race for 2025 after reports confirmed that BYD recorded sales of 1.61 million pure electric vehicles (BEV) units as of the end of September, compared to 1.22 million units recorded by Tesla in the same period. 

 

A significant difference between the two brands

For your information, the gap of nearly 388000 units marks BYD as the new leader in the global pure EV market, ending Tesla's dominance that was previously considered unrivalled in the segment. According to reports, BYD shipped around 582500 pure EV units during the third quarter of 2025.

Although the figures show a slight quarter-on-quarter decline of around four per cent, the overall total still keeps BYD ahead of its main competitor. In the same period, Tesla recorded deliveries of 497,100 units, up 29.4 per cent from the previous quarter.

Moreover, BYD has been consistently ahead of Tesla since the fourth quarter of 2024, thanks to its aggressive expansion strategy and efficient supply chain integration. Manufacturing batteries, chips and key components provides cost advantages and supply stability.

In addition to pure electric vehicles, BYD is also strengthening its position through its plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) line-up, which contributes to large-scale economic efficiency.

The combination of BEV and PHEV makes BYD more flexible in meeting the demands of various markets, while also helping to lower the average cost of battery production.
