Chinese automakers remain dominant in the global electric vehicle (EV) market in April 2026 despite facing fierce competition in the domestic market. This is proven by BYD’s recent strong performance. So, what should you know about it?

BYD leads the market

According to a report by CarNewsChina, BYD remained at the top with sales of 314100 NEV units in April. Although this figure marked a year-on-year decline for the 8th consecutive month, BYD's exports set a new record with 134500 units. Chery recorded a historic achievement when their NEV sales surpassed 100000 units for the first time with 100276 units.

Moreover, Geely recorded 135591 NEV units, while its premium brand Zeekr reached a new record with 31787 units (+132% YoY). Among the surprises was Leapmotor, which recorded its highest sales of all time with 71387 units (+73.9% YoY).

Additionally, China is expected to still account for over 60% of global EV sales in the month, driven by strong export growth despite relatively slow domestic demand.
