Bajet Malaysia 2024 - RM2400 rebate for e-motorcycle purchases and other EV-related announcements

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tabled Bajet Malaysia 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat today, which includes several measures to further improve the electric vehicle (EV) industry in our country. Read on to find out more about the initiatives that will roll out starting next year. 

First up, Anwar asserted that the government is committed to further developing the EV industry in our country and encouraging the people’s EV adoption. Toward that end, the government welcomes the investment of RM170 million by companies such as TNB, Gentari and Tesla Malaysia to build 180 EV charging stations nationwide.

Besides that, the government has also agreed with the proposal by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to provide incentives for citizens to purchase electric motorcycles or e-motorcycles. Through a scheme to encourage the usage of electric motorcycles, starting in 2024, the government will provide citizens who earn less than RM120,000 annually to get rebates of up to RM2400 to purchase the two-wheeled EV. 

Emphasis was also given to electric-powered public transportation under Bajet Malaysia 2024. Anwar said that in order to support the LRT3 project, the government has agreed to allocate RM600 million to procure 150 electric buses and build 3 bus depots.

The government has also agreed to extend the income tax exemption of up to RM2500 for expenses related to EV charging for 4 years. The Prime Minister also announced tax cuts for EV rental costs for another 2 years.
