If you had been waiting for the Nikon DL series of premium compact camera to finally hit the market, you’ll be sorely disappointed that Nikon is now officially cancelling its release.
Nikon announced recently, thru a press release, that the long-awaited Nikon DL series of premium compact camera, the DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8, DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8, and DL24-500 f/2.8-5.6, will be cancelled.

The Nikon DL series was originally planned for a June 2016 release, but was delayed indeterminately due to some issues with the integrated circuit for image processing. Considering the increase in development costs, and the drop in the number of expected sales due to the slow-down of the market, Nikon is concerned regarding the profitability of the DL series which ultimately see it being cancelled.
This is probably due the consumer market shifting towards mobile photography and also intensified competition from other brands. The company also released its third quarter financial results which seemed to indicate extraordinary loss from April to December of 2016, causing them to update their forecast for the financial year ending in March, lowering predictions and operating income. This is all due to a sluggish and shrinking market for digital cameras.

It is really sad news to see the Nikon DL series to be cancelled, especially considering how promising the unique DL18-50 is in a class of its own, being an ultra-wide angle premium compact camera. Well I guess, we still have the Sony RX100 series and the Canon G7x series to count on for premium compact cameras.
