With 5G becoming a thing, you might think it's time to get a new mobile plan. Or perhaps you're a student looking to grab your first plan. If you want to keep your costs low and pay only what you use, your best bet is to sign up for a prepaid plan.
Mind you, there are plenty of mobile prepaid plans in Malaysia. So, what plans are available, and which one should you pick? Well, that's what we hope to help you decide today. Here are the best mobile prepaid plans available in Malaysia as of December 2022.
Flexible plans - Celcom Xpax
Celcom gives you plenty of flexibility with its Mix & Match programme. First, you get to choose a monthly, weekly, or hourly pass. This setup can be handy if you have a limited budget. For example, your parents give you some allowance for a weekly plan for your school holidays (or a school trip). With the RM12/week plan, you get unlimited calls, 20GB of 3Mbps mobile Internet, and 1GB of wireless hotspot data.
Of course, the 30-day plans give more value if you can afford them. You'll get a similar 30-day plan for RM35, with 3Mbps Internet capped at 60GB and 3GB of wireless hotspot. If you want something faster, the 30GB High Speed monthly pass offers 30GB of 4G/5G high-speed Internet, unlimited calls, and 1 month of free Blacknut Cloud Gaming.
Mind you, these are all preset passes. The idea behind Mix & Match is to give Malaysians a flexible plan. You can check out all the options available over at the Celcom website.
Straightforward value - Digi Next
Overall, Digi's prepaid plans are quite straightforward. There's a total of six different fixed prepaid plans available, and they're more or less the same. How they differ from each other is by data and wireless hotspot caps. For instance, the Next 30 (RM30 for 30 days) plan gives you 20GB of high-speed Internet and 2GB of wireless hotspot data.
On the other hand, the Next 35 plan has 30GB of data, 3GB of wireless hotspot, and unlimited calls. It's a great deal considering it's just RM5 more. There's also the new, more gaming-focused RDY plan (RM68/30 days) that offers 50GB of high-speed Internet, unlimited calls, and unlimited data for mobile gaming with OGL. It also gives you 5% cashback when buying game credits.
For streaming and WFH - Maxis Hotlink
When it comes to prepaid plans, Hotlink went with two types of base plans and two types of digital plans. Each plan comes with different features to make them stand out, so that's good if you have specific needs.
First, you could pick between the Hotlink Pantas or Hotlink Unlimited plan. The former gives you 8 to 25GB of high-speed Internet data and unlimited calls for 30 days. You also have the option to drop the unlimited calls for 365 days of validity, which could be great if you mostly use Wi-Fi. As for Unlimited, you get slower speeds but no data cap. You'll also get unlimited local calls, unlimited wireless hotspot, and uncapped high-speed Internet from 2 am to 2 pm.
On the other hand, the digital plan is for online usage. Hotlink Streaming gives you 5 to 25GB of high-speed Internet and unlimited high-speed streaming from 6 am to 6 pm. This is great if you watch a lot of YouTube/TikTok videoes or listen to music on Spotify. Hotlink Work From Home is similar, except it gives you unlimited data for apps like Microsoft Teams, Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom, and more.
Widest 5G coverage (as of Dec 2022) - Yes Prepaid
Unlike most telcos, Yes is a smaller player in the prepaid mobile space. It only has one plan - the Yes Prepaid FT5G Unlimited - to offer to customers. But what's great about this is that it offers unlimited 5G right off the bat. Currently, it's also arguably the best network when it comes to 5G, by virtue of having an early headstart.
When outside of 5G coverage, you'll still get up to 7Mbps of 4G connectivity. The best part is that the 4G connection has 60 days of account validity. In addition, you'll get unlimited calls and 9GB of wireless hotspot for 30 days. If you want in on the telco with currently the widest 5G network in Malaysia, this could be a good option.
Alternate 5G and no active expiry limits - Unifi Bebas
Telekom Malaysia's Unifi Bebas mobile prepaid comes in an RM10 starter that offers 3GB of 4G data, 20 cents per minute for calls, and 10 cents per SMS. Highly affordable as it is, but you'll also get to pick one of three types of add-ons - Bebas2njoy, Data, and Voice. These offer unlimited data, high-speed data and talk time, respectively.
If you're hoping to get 5G access, the Bebas monthly (30-day add-on) is your best bet for RM55 (now on promo for RM35). You could also opt for calls of up to 200 minutes for just RM20, and not have to worry about your talk time expiring. This is because the Unifi Bebas prepaid plans without any time limits don't have a validity period. In other words, you can accumulate talk time and high-speed data on your account and use it only when you need to. All you need to do is to keep your account active by using it regularly.
Unlimited 4G data - U Mobile Prepaid
U Mobile also offers pretty straightforward mobile prepaid packages. Customers have a selection of three 30-day plans here - Prepaid U25, Prepaid U35, and Prepaid U40. All three offer unlimited 4G at 3Mbps or 6Mbps and unlimited calls. It doesn't sound like much, but there's more.
If you need more speed, the U25 plan offers 1GB of high-speed data per day for a total of 30 hours per month. The U35 and U40 plans go a step further by providing unlimited 5G for the weekends. Besides that, U Mobile offers add-ons for wireless hotspot and high-speed data.
Incredible customisation - Yoodo
Yoodo is an interesting company, as it doesn't exactly have prepaid plans. Instead, Yoodo claims that it's using a hybrid prepaid and postpaid model. With Yoodo, you get to customise your mobile plan to your preference. The website provides sliders you can use to choose the maximum data, voice, and SMS you want. Customers can also choose between high-speed or unlimited data.
Of course, that flexibility can also mean that you're not sure what to go for. In that case, the company has prepared some preset packages that serve different needs. These plans range from social media-focused ones to plans that give plenty of talk time.
As you can see, there are more companies that offer mobile prepaid plans than most would expect. The big telcos offer solid plans and are well-known, so you can trust them to be reliable (most of the time). However, we recommend checking out Yoodo or Yes, especially if you want to have customisation options or 5G.
