When in doubt, bring back what worked before seems to be the mantra of many tech companies in trouble. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but BlackBerry seem to be following this path by releasing the "new" BlackBerry 9720 which not only has the same older design but also the same older specs and operating system as well. The tech specs for the BlackBerry 9720 include:

  • 800MHz Processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 2.8-inch touchscreen + QWERTY keyboard
  • 1450 mAh battery
  • BlackBerry OS 7.1

According to the BlackBerry 9720 press release, the phone is targeting emerging markets like Malaysia and some other countries, focusing on people shifting up from a feature phone. While there are no details on pricing just yet, we expect it to be priced less than the BlackBerry Q5 which is still quite expensive considering the hardware it ships with. Buyers beware though, because if you're buying it because it is cheap, be warned that the tech you're buying is outdated by about two years now. If you liked the older design and don't mind the older tech, then by all means, the BlackBerry 9720 may be just right for you, However, BlackBerry have a lot of competition in this segment as there are many more up-to-date smartphones priced for less and BBM is now available for both iOS and Android.
