Blank Youtube homepage? Maybe you can try switching on your watch history

In case you didn’t know, Youtube will stop showing video recommendations if you turn your watch history off. This information is confirmed on Youtube’s support page on 8 August 2023. That said, what should you know about the latest update?

As we mentioned, Youtube will disable your video recommendations if you don’t have a proper watch history. That can also happen if your watch history is switched off. If you turn your watch history off, you can still see the search bar and the left-hand guide menu. However, your recommendation tab will be clear and empty. This situation applies to both mobile and website.

According to Youtube, this change will allow you to browse videos on the platform without the distraction of recommended videos. As expected, a lot of Youtube users are uncomfortable with this change. Especially when it does not apply to logged-out users with no watch history. Youtube explained:

“We are launching this new experience to make it more clear which YouTube features rely on watch history to provide video recommendations and make it more streamlined for those of you who prefer to search rather than browse recommendations.”

You might have experienced this change. Youtube also confirms this update will be rolled out to everyone slowly over the next few months. If you prefer recommendations for Youtube videos, you can leave your Youtube watch history on. Remember, you can change your watch history settings anytime.
