Bootloader on Galaxy XR suggests Samsung is okay with custom ROMs this time (?)

Did you know that it's possible for some phones to be modded? Modding can change the looks and functions of a phone's UI, so you could even avoid bloatware. Samsung isn't a fan of this, but its new Galaxy XR headset could allow custom ROMs.

Bootloader spotted

Recently, Galaxy XR user Brad Lynch (via Android Authority) confirmed that you can unlock the bootloader of Samsung's new extended reality headset. It can be unlocked via the Developer Options in the Settings menu, thereby allowing users to install a custom operating system on the device. Of course, doing so voids the warranty.

So, what's so good about unlocking the bootloader? Not much, for the average Joe. However, the option to unlock the bootloader can be useful for developers or enthusiasts who want to experiment with the UI or develop apps for the device. In case you didn't know, Samsung's smartphones and mobiles no longer have this option, so it was a surprise to see it on the Galaxy XR.

An unexpected advantage?

Most XR headsets on the market don't allow users to unlock the bootloader. This includes Android-based models, like the Meta Quest series and Apple's Vision Pro headset. In that sense, the Samsung Galaxy XR could be the more attractive choice for developers and enthusiasts. However, this is assuming that Samsung doesn't patch this option out.
