Bug in Chrome 79 deletes data in some apps, Google decides to pause updates

The latest update for Google Chrome has been out for a few days. But the rollout has been paused for mobile users for the time being. Google made the decision after a bug in the new version began to delete data from some apps that use Android WebView.

According to Android Police, Chrome now functions as Android WebView, basically the operating system's internal app to render web pages. For example, when you log in to a webpage through the use of an app that doesn't have its own internal web browser to render websites, Chrome takes over.

Now, a change in Chrome version 79 is that the storage location for web data has been changed. However, users have reported that some of the data weren't moved to the new location properly. This refers to the ones for localStorage and WebSQL, which are often used by web apps and packaged apps. As a result, there have been instances where users had the data for such applications effectively 'deleted', or couldn't be accessed.

We do not currently know which or how many apps have been affected but hopefully a fix would be provided soon. Have any of you notice this problem? Do let us know on our Facebook page and make sure to stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news like this.
