Building the Ubuntu Edge - Get world's most powerful smartphone today

concepts-1.jpg

Canonical is the main company developing Ubuntu and have come to the conclusion that the best device for convergence between your computer devices is a smartphone. They've also realized that all the really cool hardware takes several years of testing, feasibility and analysis before they actually arrive in devices and because of that, we probably won't see the ultimate convergence device (smartphone) until we all have some grey hairs here and there. For that reason, they have created a crowd-funding campaign to create this ultimate convergence device / smartphone called the Ubuntu Edge. Tech specs for the Ubuntu Edge include:

  • fastest available multi-core processor
  • unibody chassis from a single block of textured metal
  • at least 4GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 4.5-inch (1280 x 720, Sapphire crystal)
  • 8MP rear camera + 2MP front camera
  • Supports Dual-LTE antenna + dual-band 802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 LE + NFC
  • 64mm x 124mm x 9mm
  • Silicon-anode battery
  • dual-boot Ubuntu + Android

While some specs may seem a bit lower than usual, Canonical are adamant that they will not get caught up in a screen PPI (Pixel Per Inch) pixel density or camera MP (Mega Pixel) race. Instead, the Ubuntu Edge will provide a full Ubuntu desktop PC performance while on the go. Despite the total goal of the campaign being $32 million, as of the time of writing (29 days left), they've already made $3.7 million. They've also made it clear that this is for those looking to get a premium smartphone only, which explains why the actual phone may cost about $830 (RM2638) (previously it was $600) but you can get two for $1400 (RM4451).
