The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) in a statement announced that the flying of drones without approval in celebration and parade areas nationwide is banned from 26 to 31 August 2024. This is in connection with the Merdeka Day celebrations happening during that period.

CAAM added that the ban is to ensure that preparations and the Merdeka Day celebrations can be conducted safely. It’s also meant to avoid any unwanted incidents involving public safety.

Moreover, the ban is aimed at reducing the risk of accidents with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Fire and Rescue Department’s aircraft that are conducting training and engaged in low-level formation flying at several celebration areas. CAAM stressed that any flight activity, including the flying of drones that can endanger the public or property, is subject to Section 4 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969, Regulation 98, 140 to 144, of the Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulations and the Civil Aviation Directives (CADs).
