It was an inevitable outcome, but another gaming event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the main organiser for the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2020, has announced that the physical event will be cancelled. Like many of such events this year, the organisers will be converting it to an online event.

TGS is an annual games exhibition held in Tokyo and is one of the most anticipated ones in the calendar year, especially for fans of Japanese games and developers. It was supposed to run from 24 to 27 September 2020 at the Makuhari Messe, but concerns of the virus outbreak mean that letting the event run as planned is a bad idea. The announcement doesn't mention when and how the online event will be held but did say that there will be an official statement in late May.

Honestly, this may not make a difference for people who can't attend TGS physically, as their source of TGS news has always been media outlets and online streams. However, streams online happen if the developer or publisher is hosting one, plus it's quite different from attending a gaming exhibition in person. Also, indie developers may not get much exposure for their games with the new online format, which would be quite a shame.

Regardless, this cancellation is par for the course and something that all of us already expected. Still, it would be great to see highly anticipated games being showcased as planned.
