In early July, Microsoft laid off 9000 employees across the globe. Among the departments, the gaming division was affected the most, resulting in the cancellation of games that were in development. This includes developers at King, the studio best known for Candy Crush Saga.
AI Tools Intended to Assist, Not Replace
According to Mobilegamer.biz, roughly 190 developers were reportedly laid off after helping to build internal generative AI tools, which ultimately took over some of their responsibilities. Initially, the AI systems were introduced to assist with game development processes, such as narrative design and testing.
Employees were encouraged to help train and improve these tools, believing it would complement their work. However, some now believe the AI advancements contributed directly to their own redundancies. Some former team members from departments that focused on quality assurance, level design, and narrative expressed frustration, suggesting they had unknowingly helped automate themselves out of a job.
Growing Ethical Concerns in Game Development
The situation at King is the latest in a growing trend of AI displacing creative and technical roles across the industry. While AI can enhance productivity and reduce costs, its use at the expense of human workers raises ethical and strategic questions, particularly in creative fields like game development.
No Public Response Yet From King or Activision Blizzard
As of now, neither King nor Activision Blizzard has officially addressed the report’s claims in detail. The case underscores a growing tension in tech and gaming: How do companies balance innovation with responsibility to their workforce?
