“Canon has harnessed imaging know-how to develop these new and versatile compact models that deliver stunning images and HD videos with ease. The PowerShot G5 X will delight serious photographers especially in less than ideal lighting conditions as the built-in EVF enables a true preview of the image while the PowerShot G9 X will appeal to style conscious users who desire a powerful yet convenient everyday camera.’’ Donny Ling, Director of the Imaging Communication Products Division of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
As you may know, the PowerShot G series have a reputation of producing high quality pictures that are comparable with the EOS line of DSLR cameras. The new G5 X and G9 X’s ISO speed, aperture and AF are complemented by the control ring around the lens of the touch screen for convenient camera settings. The user will also have an easy time shooting wide angle or tight spaces dues to the model’s optical zoom lens (4.2x and 3x respectively).

Perhaps what separates the G5 X with the rest of the PowerShot models is the built-in EVF. The EVF has a mind boggling 2.36 million dots high resolution, which is similar to the colour gamut from a computer monitor (sRGB). With such technology, users will be able to enjoy the images with the EVF, finalizing the picture and reflecting exactly the same as what was seen by the camera sensor. The EVF also gives a clear visual to the user’s eyes when shooting in a bright environment. Likewise, dark environments like a concert won’t have much problem thanks to the EVF. This is due to the perceptive system that disables the LCD screen automatically. Other than that, the G5 X handles selfies, low or high angle shots and moving objects very well.

Meanwhile, the G9 X holds the lightweight champion title for being the lightest camera in the PowerShot G family. Weighing 209 grams only, this camera is both good for shooting pictures and mobility. The leather-like trim frame on the camera’s sides are for a solid grip while taking a picture. There’s also a new Auto ND Filter that lets the user to capture the moment with appropriate brightness, Story Highlights that functions like a slideshow with a series of photos + background music, and a Short Clip Movie feature that gives 4-6 movie snippets in normal-fast-slow motion.

Besides that, the G5 X and G9 X have WiFi and NFC connectivity for sharing accessibility between compatible cameras and devices such as the Canon Connect Station CS100 and Canon iMAGE GATEWAY (CiG). They also offer a Canon Camera Connect app that allows users to conveniently remote control camera functions from a distance away; and finally, the Compact Power Adaptor (CA-DC30) is an in-camera USB charger that is able to give extra power life for the models but it is sold separately.
So which one will you get? As mentioned earlier, both products are available now in Malaysia for RM3199 (G5 X, with GST) and RM1999 (G9 X,with GST).
