Celcom Axiata welcomes and celebrates Malaysian Badminton Olympic Team's return

Yesterday, Celcom Axiata Berhad was proud to recognise our national badminton athletes as inspirational champions who stood strong and resilient, uniting Malaysia under one banner through the ignition of passion and desire to see our nation victorious.

During the ceremony, Malaysia’s national badminton athletes who were present are none other than 2016 Olympic silver medallists Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem, Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying. Each of them was presented with a token RM30000 appreciation reward (RM20000 cash + RM10000 Celcom credit). In addition, badminton champions Vivian Hoo, Woon Khe Wei and Tee Jing Yi, who participated during the 2016 Olympics, were also presented each with a RM20000 appreciation reward (RM10000 cash + RM10000 Celcom credit).

The ceremony was graced by Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, patron of BAM together with guests from Axiata Group Berhad, Celcom Axiata Berhad and BAM council members. The appreciation reward to the badminton athletes are a symbol of recognition and gratitude to their unyielding spirit and relentless passion for being champions among Malaysians, particularly with their recent achievement during the historical 2016 Olympics.

Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, Chairman of Celcom Axiata Berhad said Celcom Axiata continues to demonstrate commitment to fuel Badminton sportsmanship in Malaysia. The Group is pleased to honour Malaysia’s badminton team as world-class athletes who have brought pride and glory to the nation on the world stage.

“Celcom Axiata will continue to commit our support of the game and the national badminton team and associations. We are committed to sponsor RM24 million to the Badminton Association of Malaysia until 2019 and we will be spending a further RM10 million on top of the sponsorship in order to promote the game via digital and social media. We are proud and privileged to see that our national athletes’ success is a reflection of our brand that continually strives for greatness,” added Michael Kuehner, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad.

Tan Sri Al Amin Abdul Majid, acting president of Badminton Association of Malaysia said he was extremely pleased with the unprecedented success of our national shuttlers in the recently concluded Olympic Games 2016 in Rio with 3 silver medals.

“Our shuttlers have defied the odds against some of the world’s best to elevate our standings in the badminton world, particularly in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles events,” he said.

Celcom Axiata also extends its appreciation to the Badminton World Federation, BAM, dedicated players, event partners, officials, media, and guests for their continuous support and confidence in the telco. Above all, Celcom Axiata pledges to continue enhancing the game of badminton to newer and greater heights.
