Celcom Axiata Bhd today announced that Tan Sri Dr Halim Shafie has been appointed as its new interim chairman. Dr Halim’s appointment is effective since 2 June 2022.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, prior to helming the interim chairman role, Dr Halim has been serving as Axiata Group Bhd independent non-executive director since 1 November 2020. Furthermore, he has significant experience and influence in the industry, whereby he was previously Telekom Malaysia Bhd chairman from 2009 to 2015 as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman from 2006 to 2009.

Besides that, Dr Halim was also the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications secretary general in 2000 and has served in many government agencies. These include the Ministry of Education, Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) and the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN).

Speaking of Dr Halim’s appointment, Celcom CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi said that the company is looking forward to his guidance and leadership. The major telecommunication company also hopes that the new interim chairman can drive the organisation towards new strides and creating value for customers.

Dr Halim was appointed to fill in the role as interim chairman following the resignation of Datuk Izzaddin Idris as Axiata’s president and group chief executive officer (CEO) and Celcom’s chairman. Celcom Axiata Bhd announced Izzaddin’s resignation on 31 May 2022.

It would be interesting to see the direction that Celcom Axiata Bhd will be taking under the guidance of Dr Halim. Currently, the company is in the midst of two major undertakings, the merger with Digi as well as the 5G service agreement with DNB
