Celcom partners Universiti Teknologi Petronas in catalysing digital leaning

As of 9 May 2016, Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) have come to an agreement and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the MoU will see the two parties collaborate to benefit especially students through data connectivity services, as well as strategic collaboration for the development of UTP undergraduates via internship opportunities and entrepreneurial programmes.

The partnership will oversee and support UTP’s initiative to expand on its current wireless infrastructure to a broader and faster wireless access and the latest in technology, due to the network challenges within its campus vicinity in Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak. 600 WiFi access will be provided by Celcom to cover both indoor and outdoor area and more than 8000 students and 900 UTP employees can be connected 24 hours every day, with 1Gbps of high-speed internet as long as they have an ID and password for it.

The MoU was inked by Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata and Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, Vice Chancellor of UTP, and witnessed 2 by Encik Afizulazha Abdullah, Chief Business Services Officer of Celcom Axiata, and Associate Professor Dr. Fawnizu Azmadi Hussin, Director, Strategic Alliance Office, UTP.

Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly commented that the new partnership is indeed momentous for Celcom Axiata as it marks another milestone for the company while expanding their reach in providing greater connectivity.

Meanwhile, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, said “UTP is always committed to academic excellence in preparing its students to develop and thrive in their studies and ultimately, their career. UTP welcomes collaborations that would help the university community to gain remarkable achievements in shaping its path and building its knowledge and experience for further advancement."

“The utility of wireless network technology has a positive effect on teaching, learning, research endeavors and administration. Wireless network technology has advanced to a degree, that we simply cannot ignore these technological advances. Students’ needs and wants for the ever-growing ICT in campus are vast and demanding and we are required to always stay ahead of the game and fulfil students’ insatiable ‘data appetite’.” he said.

Through this collaboration, the UTP community can enjoy a premium internet service with multiple internet data plan at a minimum of 22.5 Gigabytes data per month offered by Celcom. Both Celcom and UTP will also further collaborate in various key initiatives towards the development of UTP undergraduates, sharing ideas on telecommunication, conduct leadership activities via students’ societies or clubs, generate opportunities for student internship and career openings with Celcom or Axiata Group Berhad, as well as the prospects for UTP students to participate in entrepreneurial programmes developed by Celcom and its partners.
