Ookla, the global leader in mobile and broadband network intelligence has announced that Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) is the recipient of the Ookla’s Speedtest Award for Best Mobile Coverage in Malaysia. The recognition was given to Celcom during the recent Ookla Speedtest Awards ceremony at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Based on Ookla's Speedtest report for Q3-Q4 2021, Celcom garnered an average score of 787, topping the Best Mobile Coverage category in Malaysia. Furthermore, the mobile network operator also recorded the highest scan count of more than 142 million scans and covered 356,606 locations throughout our country.

Celcom led with a winning score of 93.2% for 4G coverage and 99.7% for general coverage nationwide. In a statement yesterday, Celcom said that the award is also a recognition of the impact from Celcom’s RM825 million capital expenditure for network improvements in 2021.

The improvements include an additional 900 LTE sites and over 9,500 sites optimised with improved 4G coverage and capacity across Malaysia. Celcom also asserted that its 4G network investments also achieved an estimated 99% 4G LTE pop coverage or higher in 7 states, while also increasing 4G LTE pop coverage in Pahang, Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan.

It seems that 2022 is going to be a milestone year for the mobile network operator. Earlier this year, Celcom was also named Malaysia’s most trusted telecommunications company in a survey conducted by market research firm, Ipsos Sdn Bhd.
