OpenAI has launched a new feature called Study Mode, designed to transform how students and learners use ChatGPT. Rolled out on 29 July 2025, Study Mode is now available to users on the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. So, what should you know about it?
What we could expect
The new Study Mode feature repositions ChatGPT as an educational companion rather than a tool for quick answers. With this mode, users are guided through questions and topics with step-by-step support, open-ended prompts, and quizzes—encouraging deeper understanding and critical thinking.
Designed to encourage thinking, not just answers
Study Mode aims to support active learning by prompting users to think through problems instead of simply providing solutions. Once enabled via the "Study and Learn" option in the Tools menu, ChatGPT asks questions, offers feedback, and adapts its responses based on the user's existing knowledge level.
This new feature is built around the Socratic method, where users are encouraged to explore, reason, and arrive at answers through guided questioning.
For example, instead of showing a math solution, ChatGPT may ask what the user knows about the topic first, then provide hints or structured steps based on the response.
The goal is to promote long-term retention, and the feature is flexible—users can toggle Study Mode on or off at any time. OpenAI collaborated with over 40 educational experts and institutions in developing the system.
While Study Mode currently relies on system instructions rather than being fully integrated into the model, future updates may deepen this functionality.
From a Malaysian tech perspective, this could be particularly useful for students preparing for national exams or university-level coursework. It also adds educational value to ChatGPT usage beyond casual browsing or productivity tasks.
