The iPhone 15 series is just a month plus away and there are already some rumours here and there. Recently, a few clues about the next-gen iPhones have been found in tvOS 17 by @aaronp13, which allegedly confirms the chip arrangements for the iPhone 15 series.
From the tweet post below, you can see that our unreleased iPhone models got added in tvOS 17 beta 1 but later removed in beta 5. The iPhone references were iPhone 15,4, iPhone 15,5, iPhone 16,1, and iPhone 16,2. But what do these numbers mean? Well, according to sources, the numbering suggests the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max may get the 3nm A17 Bionic chips, whereas the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus could use back the same A16 chips from the iPhone 14 Pro variants.
4 unreleased iPhone models were added in tvOS 17 beta 1 but were not noticed until now. They were removed in tvOS 17 beta 5:

Back then, the numbers 15,4 and 15,5 were in the same sequence as the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max (previously iPhone 15,2 and iPhone 15,3). The number 15 here represents the A16 chip. So just like last year, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus were using the A15 chips, with number reference to iPhone 14,7 and iPhone 14,8.
Furthermore, the numbers 16,1 and 16,2 were referenced for the first time in the tvOS 17 codes, highly suggesting the new A17 chips as aforementioned. With this, it's likely that Apple might continue to separate the pro and non-pro variants apart like last year. We don't know what's the point of this strategy because previously, it was to overcome the chip shortage issue.
That being said, this rumour has been consistently shown up so it's best that we prepare ourselves for it. The next Apple annual event may come in 12 September 2023 so until then, let's wait for the official announcement.
