If you or your company got targeted by ransomware, is there a way to recover your data, or should you pay the ransom? According to the Cybersecurity Malaysia CEO, the answer should always be 'No'.
According to The Star, Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab was present at Cyber Security Asia 2023 in KL earlier today. He said we should avoid paying any ransom because it incentivises cyber criminals. Instead, he suggested Malaysians seek assistance from the authorities. Specifically, victims of cybercrime can contact the Cyber999 service under the Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCert) for assistance.
For your info, ransomware refers to malware that blocks the victim's access to a database, application, or an entire computer until the cybercriminal gets a fee (the ransom). An example is the MOVEit Transfer security flaw, which has breached many companies globally. Cybersecurity recently released an advisory to alert Malaysian companies of this issue, as companies like Prudential Assurance Malaysia and Prudential BSN Takaful have already been affected.
