With the upcoming release of Android N, Google has taken steps to create a more robust VR experience for the Android platform. During Google I/O, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai was on stage to introduce DayDream, the VR platform that will be built into Android itself.

Daydream will be running at a low level in Android itself, as part of the kernel. It will be a native VR experience baked in, and we can expect Phones that will be capable of entering this mode to be specially certified by Google. Apparently we should expect new devices from Samsung, HTC, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel to support Daydream once they launch later in the year.

Unsurprisingly, there will be an app store for Daydream, where all the VR-ready apps will live. You can access the store using VR mode, and whenever you are in Daydream you can easily go back to the list of your VR-capable apps. Among the expected apps includes Street View, YouTube, Play Movies, and Google Photos, but also many VR games will be listed as well.. When inside Daydream, your notifications will be displayed as 3D cards.

Also announced during the event is a reference design VR headset from Google. No names given yet but this is the official successor to the Cardboard. As it is a reference design, it is mainly aimed for the partners to manufacture. Included with the headset is a controller for easy access in VR more. Looking forward to see partners creating their own interpretation of the new VR headset.
