Deputy Comm Minister: Malaysians lost a whopping RM1.34 billion to online scams in 2023

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching today revealed that a whopping RM1.34 billion of losses due to online scams were recorded in our country last year. This is according to the National Scam Response Centre’s (NSRC) data from 1 January to 8 December 2023. 

Furthermore, the losses were from 33234 online crime cases involving 6 modus operandi. These include investment scams (RM437 million), e-commerce (RM383 million), telecommunications (RM334 million), e-finance (RM104 million), love scams (RM41 million) and non-existent loans (RM39 million). 

As reported by Bernama, Nie Ching added that the figures for 2023 show an increase from the year prior. For reference, NSRC data showed that the losses for 2022 due to online scams were RM804 million.
