It's been months since Valve first announced the Steam Machine, but the RAM crisis has made it hard for the company to start mass production. That means an indefinite wait for a one-stop Steam console, so enthusiasts have figured out an alternative - using a Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5).
Linux-powered PS5
A GitHub account "TheOfficialFloW" has uploaded its open source project called "ps5-linux". As the name suggests, the project's aim is to transform your Sony PS5 into a Linux computer. This means you can run the Linux-based SteamOS on the PS5. The ps5-linux can utilise a PS5's 8-core 3.5 GHz CPU and 2.23 GHz GPU to run Steam games and other emulators. It supports 4K60 video and audio HDMI output.
Limitations
Of course, this project isn't without limitations. The ps5-linux doesn't overwrite the existing PS5's operating system (Orbis OS) or turn it into a dual-boot system, so you have to run the exploit every time you want to boot into the "SteamOS mode". It also doesn't support features like standby and resume, only works for PS5 firmware versions 3.xx to 4.xx, and some features like screen capture are buggy.
That said, it seems the developers plan to continue working on the project, so maybe more PS5s can turn into Steam Machines in the future. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
