To stop syndicates from producing fake MyKad, our Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has stated that the government is developing something which is called 'Digital ID'. It is said that the new Digital ID would serve as a trustworthy identification platform that benefits the private and public sectors about identification purposes when performing online digital transactions.

According to the minister, the government has agreed to implement the National Digital Identification initiative or Digital ID where the National Registration Department (NRD) will be the lead agency in this initiative. Besides that, it was shared that the Digital ID would rely on complex biometric features such as 10 fingerprints, facial and iris recognition systems to ensure security.

It is worth mentioning that the Digital ID is not an alternative to replace the current physical MyKad but a new way for the government to eradicate syndicates producing fake MyKad. However, it will have other benefits as well including faster verification for enforcement agencies to detect if an individual is using a fake MyKad. At the moment, it is still unsure when NRD will start to implement this initiative.
