Dimensity 9300 could become first chipset without little cores

For the longest time, ARM-based chipsets followed the ARM big.LITTLE concept. The idea is to have a CPU with performance cores and power efficiency cores. But we could see a new MediaTek chipset later this year that abandons or changes that concept.

According to Digital Chat Station, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will be a chipset following an "all big cores" concept. Its CPU is expected to feature four Cortex-X4 super cores and four Cortex-A720 big cores. For comparison, the Dimensity 9200+ launched earlier this month packs a Cortex-X3 super core, three Cortex-A715 big cores, and four Cortex-A510 little cores.

The tipster claimed that MediaTek aims to have this chipset directly compete with Apple's A17 Bionic chip, which is expected to be equipped on iPhone 15 series later this year. On paper, the chipset will also allegedly deliver more than 50% improvements in power efficiency. Moreover, the source said that the super cores will feature "moderate" frequencies. It's suggested that MediaTek will start testing production samples of the chipset in October 2023.

Could MediaTek really deliver on such claims? We'll have to wait for the chipset to launch to find out. Until then, we'll keep an eye out for relevant updates, so stay tuned to TechNave for more news.
