Former Disney executive Kevin Mayer believes Disney needs to find a new approach to make the gaming segment a growth driver for the company. Among the suggestions raised is buying gaming companies like Epic Games.
There are senior Disney Executives that are interested in this idea
According to him, Epic Games is a potential asset to own, especially in efforts to strengthen Disney's position in the gaming industry. As reported by GameSpot , tech journalist Alex Heath also revealed on The Town podcast that he knows "for sure" that there are senior Disney executives interested in taking over Epic Games and are waiting for the right time .
However, he said, not everyone within Disney agreed with the idea and considered the move a bad idea. Currently, Epic Games is still controlled by its founders, with CEO Tim Sweeney holding full control over the voting shares. This means he has the ability to make decisions on his own.
For the record, Disney has previously invested around US$1.5 billion in Epic Games as part of a collaboration to develop game-based entertainment experiences, including through platforms such as Fortnite.
Moreover, Epic isn't the only company that has been linked to a Disney takeover. Since 2022, Disney has reportedly been interested in acquiring Electronic Arts, but that never materialized. EA is currently in the process of being acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) for $55 billion.
