Apple's emphasis on security is one of the selling points for their products. However, sad things can still happen as it is reported that dozens of iPhone users have had their devices hacked by receiving just a text message on iMessage recently. According to the source, these users are mostly journalists from a reputable media company Al Jazeera.

The attack is believed to have been carried out on behalf of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates governments. It is said that spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO Group is also involved in the attack to hack the journalists' iPhones. Researchers at Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto said that this could be a major espionage campaign against one of the world’s leading media organizations that has long been a thorn in the side of many of the region’s autocratic regimes.

Besides that, it is discovered that “almost all” iPhone devices are vulnerable to this attack if users were using any version of iOS that pre-dated the current iOS 14, which appears to have fixed the vulnerability. However, it is mentioned that this is a highly-targeted attack, and the other ordinary iPhone users are exceedingly unlikely to face such circumstances even prior to iOS 14. No matter what, the source mentions that it is still good security practice to keep your system up-to-date.
