If you frequent the NKVE highway, you might notice the Smart Lane. While it did cause confusion and mixed reactions in the past, the Smart Lane did gather positive responses from the public. That said, the Smart Lane will be activated again for this upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri. That said, what should you know about it?

For your information, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works, Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam said, the decision was made following an initiative to implement it during the Chinese New Year celebrations which had previously received encouraging feedback from road users.

According to him, users are asked to wait for the announcement from the relevant concession companies regarding the date and total number of SmartLane locations activated on each highway.

"We are grateful to the road users who gave a lot of feedback on the effectiveness of the SmartLane system after it was activated in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration last year. We will improve this system over time. The ministry also hopes that this system can benefit and further improve the safety aspects of road users during the Aidilfitri festival,"

Earlier, the activation of the SmartLane system by several concessionaires including PLUS was criticized by many parties for confusing road users. This is due to the lack of notification about the SmartLane route activation locations causing many road users to misunderstand and think that there are vehicles abusing the emergency lane for their benefit.

In another development, Hasnol also revealed that his ministry has encouraged some highway concession companies to increase the provision of open payment system services using debit or credit cards at toll plazas. He explained that if more lanes provide the service, the ministry is confident that the problem of unusual congestion due to technical issues regarding the use of Touch 'n Go (TNG), SmartTAG and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards can be overcome.

At the same time, Hasnol also expects the opening of four packages of the West Coast Highway (WCE) in the state of Perak, including the latest Section 11 that connects Taiping to Beruas, able to give some relief to road users to go home for Eid, especially to the northern states of the peninsula.
