East Coast residents rejoice. Today, the Transport Ministry has confirmed the ECRL construction will be completed by the end of 2026. That said, what should you know about it?

For your information, Antony Loke says the new railway line will be fully operational by January 2027. In case you didn’t know, the ECRl will cover a 4-hour travel time between Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur. In contrast, a journey by car will take you around 7 hours.

In addition, the Transport Minister also mentions that construction progress is at 64% completion as of March 2024. Plus, this line should traverse through Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor. Loke also says:

"The ECRL project has entered a new construction phase since 2023 with infrastructure works to include the installation of flyover beams, track installation, and the construction of stations and railway depots. "There are more than 1,900 work sites and almost 650 are active along this 665-kilometre (km) national infrastructure project,”

Moreover, the excavation works reached a depth of more than 8km of the 16.39 km long twin-bore Genting Tunnel. This was achieved using a combination of drill and blast method and tunnel boring machine. Reportedly, the excavators could finish drilling through Genting by the second quarter of 2025. If everything goes well, it could be the longest rail tunnel in Asia.
