As more companies build AI models, the question of data privacy becomes increasingly important. For some platforms, users are notified about data being used for training AI models and are sometimes given the choice to opt out. However, that doesn't seem to be the case for Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter).

According to RTE (via TechCrunch), Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) is suing X because the platform is training its Grok AI model with user data but didn't notify the users. The DPC accused X of failing to comply with its 2018 Data Protection Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If found guilty, Twitter International (X's global division) will incur penalties of up to 4% of its global annual turnover. According to Business of Apps, X generated USD3.4 billion (~RM15.18 billion) in revenue in 2023. 4% of that would mean penalties over USD600 million (~RM2.68 billion). The DPC is also seeking court orders to prohibit X from processing user data for training AI models.

What do you think, will the DPC win the case or will X get away with using data without permission? Share your thoughts in the comments in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
