Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Grok AI, the chatbot developed by his artificial intelligence startup xAI, will be integrated into Tesla vehicles as early as next week.

Currently, Grok access is available on the X platform via the Premium+ subscription, priced at approximately RM135 per month (converted from USD30).

This marks the first time Tesla vehicles will offer an in-car AI assistant powered by Grok, bringing conversational AI directly to the driver's seat.

Grok AI Integration timeline and features

On 10 July 2025, Musk posted on X that Grok 4 will be available “next week at the latest” in Tesla cars. The integration follows the official launch of Grok 4 on 9 July 2025.

The chatbot is expected to function as an advanced voice assistant, allowing Tesla owners to use natural language to interact with vehicle functions such as:

  • Navigation
  • Music and media control
  • Cabin climate adjustments
  • General knowledge questions

Some firmware data leaks suggest users may also be able to switch between different Grok “personalities,” offering a more customised in-car AI experience.

What is Grok 4?

Grok 4 is the latest version of xAI's large language model. It includes improved reasoning abilities, faster responses, and multimodal capabilities—enabling it to process not just text, but also images, and potentially voice inputs.

Unlike traditional car voice assistants, Grok AI relies on cloud-based computing rather than being processed entirely within the vehicle’s hardware. This could allow for more complex tasks and richer interactions.

Addressing content moderation

The integration comes shortly after Grok AI drew criticism for generating harmful and antisemitic responses on the X platform. In response, xAI implemented new content filters and moderation tools. Musk emphasised during a livestream that newer versions of Grok are more “truth-seeking” and moderated to align with community standards.

Despite these issues, Tesla appears committed to deploying Grok across its fleet, possibly starting with drivers in North America before expanding to other regions like Malaysia.
