Elon Musk believes space has the potential to be the cheapest location to run artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in the future as demand for computing power continues to rise. So, what makes it worth paying attention to?
A viable solution for the growing needs of AI facilities
For your information, Elon Musk said that AI facilities placed in orbit can harness the near-constant solar energy and take advantage of the natural cooling in the space environment. He added that the energy requirements for AI models are increasing rapidly and have the potential to put a strain on Earth's energy infrastructure and data centres in the long term.
For this reason, Musk sees building AI data centres in space as one solution that can support large-scale AI processing needs in the future. The idea is in line with the vision of companies like SpaceX and xAI that continue to develop aerospace and AI technologies, including the potential use of satellites and infrastructure in orbit to support the development of next-generation technologies.
Mission impossible for Musk?
Personally, we feel the idea itself is almost impossible. Not only will it cost a lot of money, but the execution of it could be quite tricky, if not challenging. However, if they did pull it off, it would be a more hygienic solution to the freshwater crisis caused by AI consumption. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
