Recently, Meta was sued by WhatsApp's former head of cybersecurity for allegedly exposing user data. So, what should you know about it?
He claimed that Meta might have stolen your data
For your information, the suit was filed by Attaullah Baig, who served as WhatsApp's chief cybersecurity officer from 2021 to 2025. He claims that around 1500 WhatsApp engineers had access to unlimited user data and surveillance, the same offences that led to the company being fined $5 billion in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Moreover, engineers at Meta also allegedly had the power to steal user data in the form of IP addresses, profile pictures and contact information without being detected or audited. Baig also revealed that Meta had failed to address the issue of over 100000 user accounts being hacked and stolen every day.
Additionally, his recommendations to resolve the issue were ignored. Because he insisted on resolving the issue, Baig claimed that he was ultimately fired for unsatisfactory performance.
Meta representatives issued a statement saying the suit filed by Baig was “a typical game where former employees are terminated for poor performance and then go public with distorted allegations that paint a false picture of the continued hard work of our team.”
