
Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing recently tweeted or X’d that phone prices are going to increase due to the rising costs of memory. His bottomline advice was “If you've been waiting to upgrade a device, the best time was yesterday. The next best time is now. This year's sale season won't have the discounts people are used to.”
Memory costs have doubled… and doubled again
As someone in charge of an actual brand making smartphones he noted that memory is now more expensive than any other component, including the processor or display. As such, even for the Nothing Phone (4a), prices have doubled and doubled again. Buyers of new phones can expect them to be priced at least $100 (~RM405.76) more than before.
Memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone. It's more expensive than the processor, more expensive than the display, and can account for more than 50% of the total hardware bill.
