Facebook and Instagram to ban face mask ads to get rid of COVID-19 exploitation

While Facebook can be pretty annoying on showing you ads about something you just talked about, the company have decided that they enforce a temporary ban on ads of medical masks. This is to prevent exploitation by groups or individuals in the wake of COVID-19.

The news can be traced from Facebook Product Management Director, Rob Leathern, on his Twitter account saying that Facebook is banning ads and commerce listings sellings medical face masks at a ridiculous price. Moreover, he also said that if you (yes, you) see any ads showing up, you should flag it for the Facebook team to take action. In addition, Instagram will also do the same as Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram also declared banning ads and people exploiting the public health for their gains.

The initiative will be rolling out in the next few days so do play your part in reporting the fraud ads on your social media accounts. By the way, we should also always do a cross-check on news before forwarding to friends and family. This is so that we won't cause any necessary panic just like what happened with KL Sentral last week thanks to the quick spread from WhatsApp and Twitter.
