Facebook is trying to move away from Android by building its own OS

Other than building a social media empire, Facebook has also been acquiring technology companies like Oculus, which works on virtual reality (VR). Now, the company has announced that they will be working on a new Operating System (OS) to be used for Oculus and Portal devices.

The OS is expected to help reduce the company’s reliance on Google’s Android OS and to be more self-sufficient with its own resources. It is also said that the OS will be built from scratch, and the team will be led by Mark Lucovsky, a former Microsoft engineer who co-authored the Windows NT operating system. Other than that, there is not much information in regards to the release date and which device will be the first to come with the OS.

Developing an OS is not actually a wholly-new project to Facebook. In 2013, the company had worked on the prototypes of a custom OS called Home, a user interface for limited devices from HTC and Samsung. However, the response it got was not that optimistic. It led to Facebook cutting off the updates and went back to Android.

Alongside the OS announced for Oculus and Portal devices, Facebook is also working on AR glasses with the codename ‘Orion’. The glasses will be coming in 2023, which is the same year that Apple is rumoured to release its own AR glasses too. Facebook’s AR glasses will be integrated with a brain-computer interface that correlates to brain signals.
